ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE
August 2nd, 2008A great way to get to know a new culture is by sampling their street food. I recently visited a small-town USA fair that offered gems like deep fried Pepsi and jumbo rocky mountain oysters on a stick. What that says about our culture, I’ll leave that to you to decide. Street food varies greatly from country to country and dates as far back as ancient Rome, which had bread and olive stands. Whatever the country, the hallmark of all street food is that it’s easy to eat and served by a vendor on the spot.
I began to think of a One World Wedding with various stations serving food from street fairs around the world—a virtual global marketplace at your own wedding reception. The possibilities for a street food-inspired wedding reception are endless, but a few ideas came to mind that sounded particularly delicious. One could serve Argentinean Choripán (chorizo sandwiches), Belgian Fries with Mayonnaise, Chinese Steamed Buns, English Fish & Chips, French Crepes, Greek Gyros, Kazakhstani Shashlik (shish kabobs) and Spanish Churros. Entertainment to accompany the celebration could include street musicians and street performers—transport your guests around the world and then they won’t be as envious as you board the plane for that exotic honeymoon.
