Coffee Cuppings

August 12th, 2008

Until recently, when I heard the term cupping, it only reminded me of Gwyneth Paltrow’s acupuncture/red carpet faux pas back in 2004. That’s mostly because in the world of coffee, cupping, much like wine-tasting, has long been part of the lexicon of those in the industry. But lucky for us, cupping is making its way to the average Joe.

Cupping involves deeply inhaling the aromas of the coffee, slurping it like wine so it hits the back of the palate, measuring the body, acidity and balance of the blend. There are many aromas to look for including grassy, nutty, and yum, rubber-like. Many experienced cuppers can identify the region of origin for the specific coffee, much like the terroir of wines.

Choosing a “cupping” to cap off your wedding reception is a great alternative to the less-economically friendly wine or spirit tasting, and definitely a good way to make sure that everyone makes it home safely, albeit it wired. Because coffee is grown in so many unique and distinct places around the globe, it’s a natural fit for a One World Wedding. Pour coffee service at the table or hire a local barista to come in and conduct the cupping with guests who wish to participate.

For a One World twist, choose coffees from the regions closest to your ethnic roots. Skip the ballroom dancing lessons pre-wedding and wow your guests with your Master Cupping skills.
