Hooray for Hollywood!
September 24th, 2008Girl meets boy, girl loses boy and finally girl gets boy is probably the reason we love wedding movies so much. The reality of a complicated relationship is wrapped up in a two-hour Tiffany box with a white ribbon and a happy ending. Here’s a list of our favorite wedding movies of all time. Though formulaic, each one shows characteristics of how marriage and weddings are viewed in a particular society at a particular time, stereotypes and all. From family, to tradition to cultural festivities, the best thing about wedding movies is always the ending: girl marries boy.
Monsoon Wedding (2001) – From Indian director Mira Nair, this masterpiece of a movie tells the story of an arranged marriage in modern day New Delhi.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) – Everybody and their mother has seen this indie hit about a woman who introduces her family to her non-Greek fiancé. Undoubtedly, hilarity ensues, as is only possible in a movie rife with cultural stereotypes!
The Wedding Banquet (1993) – From Oscar winning Director Ang Lee, this comedy touches on inter-generational issues, cross-cultural issues and of course, true love.
Muriel’s Wedding (1994) – Toni Collette stars as Abba-obsessed Muriel in this Australian cult classic.
Father of the Bride (1991) – Steve Martin plays the quintessential American father who makes our heart melt in this comedy remake.
The Birdcage (1996) – Hank Azaria and Gene Hackman steal the show as Agador Spartacus and Senator Kevin Keeley in one of the best meet the parents stories of all time.
Steel Magnolias (1989) – The South has risen again in this heart-wrenching ensemble, starring Julia Roberts before she was “Julia Roberts.”
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)- This 50’s musical is a highly entertaining sexist romp!
When Harry Met Sally (1989) – The ultimate relationship movie of the 80’s will always leave us wondering if men and women really can be just friends.
Sixteen Candles (1984) – Molly Ringwald is the ultimate 80’s teenager, forgotten as her older sister’s wedding becomes the family’s focus. Thank goodness for Jake Ryan.
