Bring Us Some Figgy Pudding!
October 11th, 2008Figs are legendary. In Greek mythology it is said that the Goddess Demeter revealed to mere mortals the fruit of autumn, which they called the fig. In the Bible, after eating the “forbidden fruit,” Adam and Eve covered themselves with fig leaves from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. And figs were even handed out in lieu of medals at the early Olympic games. For many years, to me the fig was simply a shriveled up fruit sitting in a box on my grandmother’s kitchen table.
Figs are definitely a One World delight. The rich, autumnal fruit (technically the flower of the fig tree) was one of the first foods cultivated by humans and are one of the highest sources of fiber and calcium. Meaning, not only are they delicious, they’re good for you! Figs are grown all over the world, from the Mediterranean, to South America, Australia, Mexico and here in the United States in places like Texas and California.
There are many varietals of figs including the Calimyrna, the Mission Fig and the Adriatic Fig. There are many ways to prepare figs, both sweet and savory, fresh and dried, and they are often included in high-end, ethnic cuisine. We picked a few of our favorite recipes from a website dedicated to figs. Here are a few ways to include the renowned fruit in your fall wedding menu. Mmmmm, figs.
