One World Progressive Wedding
August 14th, 2007
Finding wedding and reception venues in the city can be challenging. During busy months dates fill up quickly, prices increase and the pressure begins. Many cities, like our native Chicago, are comprised of uniquely individual ethnic neighborhoods where friends know each other well and each home offers a distinct atmosphere. While one person’s apartment might be perfect for martini’s, another’s condo might lend the ideal atmosphere for a dinner party, and a third house with a large back yard is best suited for late night dancing! Before you let the pressure of booking a venue get to you, consider a One World Wedding—progressive style!
A progressive wedding party takes your guests on a journey around the neighborhood as well as on a journey around the world. The cocktail hour begins at the first home featuring food, drinks and décor from a specific country or region of the world that celebrates the background of the couple. Guests then travel to the next home where they are treated to a dinner buffet of food and drinks from a different region of the world that celebrates yet another aspect of the couple’s background. From there guests move on to a third home for dessert and dancing. Depending on the number of neighbors you have willing to donate their home, your One World progressive wedding could make more than three stops on its journey around the world.
At a recent progressive wedding, the first home offered Chinese style Dim Sum Appetizers and Jasmine Tea Martinis in honor of the bride’s Chinese heritage. Dinner at the next home was a Mexican buffet to celebrate the couple’s favorite vacation spot. Dessert and dancing at the last stop featured dessert bites inspired by the American South, reflecting the groom’s Southern roots.
Neighbors can also chip in with flowers from their gardens, handmade centerpieces, decorations, entertainment (there’s at least one band on every block!), cocktails, home brews made for the occasion and transportation, if needed. A culinary and aesthetic tour of the world—as well as your neighborhood—is an intimate and unique way to celebrate your wedding.

I’m flabbergasted; however, not surprised! You and your staff are geniuses! What a great site and what a great idea! I do have one question – when I married Marly, with grandparents from all over Russia and she married me with grandparents from Romania and Wales, did that count as a OneWorldWedding? I so want to be a part of this!
Absolutely, Adam…if you were to be married today you’d very likely want to add all of those cultural influences into the catering mix..we’d make you borsht, stuffed peppers and read Dylan Thomas from Wales.
